In only two weeks the jury will announce their decision on the Prince of Asturias Award in
Communications and Humanities 2011.
or the second consecutive year Gamelab is proposing Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto as a candidate, being one
of the most influential videogame creators in history.
Mr. Miyamoto, creator of several Nintendo franchises such as Mario, Donkey Kong and The Legend of
Zelda (now videogame icons) is considered by many as a 21st century communication genius. Mr.
Miyamoto has revolutionized the videogame industry by pushing the existing technical and creative
boundaries.
Mr. Miyamoto has been the mastermind behind many innovations and advances that have allowed the
global expansion of the interactive entertainment industry, promoting new game mechanics that have
unleashed the full potential of videogames as a mental and physical catalyst, with a strong educational
and social angles. The most representative examples are Wii Fit -that set many more people in motion,
compared to other products or institutional campaigns geared towards promoting health and well-being;
Wii Music -a tool that is becoming increasingly popular in music studies; Brain Training -helping older
people to become interested in and enjoy interactive entertainment; and Art Academy -one of the most
successful artistic and educational games.
Gamelab (that will celebrate its seventh edition of the annual Spanish Games Conference and Expo in
Barcelona at the end of June), promotes again the candidacy of Mr. Miyamoto. This candidacy is
supported not only because of the importance of his work, but also because of the great support received
last year by the industry, the fans, and different figures in the cultural, communication, political scene, as
well as for the great welcome by the Foundation and the Jury. This led Miyamoto to the finals amongst
names and institutions of great importance and influence worldwide. For the first time in history the most
prestigious and international award in Spain accepted the proposal of a videogame creator. Considering
that this sector is a growing global phenomena that reaches everyone, the influence of their creators
should be acknowledged by everyone.
Gamelab has set up the website www.miyamoto.es and has created a Facebook page to promote and show the support of his candidacy.
